"Reply to all" oddity; server or Entourage??

G

When I "Reply All" to the Applescript List the duplicate addressee is in the
"To" field and the list address is in the "cc" field. This is especially
irritating when I have text in the clipboard because Entourage won't let me
remove the existing addressee if it's the only one. I end up cutting the cc
addy into the clipboard to paste it into the "To" field but then find I've
lost the text I wanted to paste into the mail.

Ideally I want the List address in the "To" field, not the "cc" field. I
wonder if this is a server configuration issue or an oddity of Entourage?

The adress in the "To" field may vary, according to the list settings. And
there's not much you can do to that (well, the list admin can usually change
the settings).

You'd rather use the "Mailing List Manager". On the "Advanced" tab, there's
a checkbox to "Always reply to the list adress".

Don't know why but it doesn't work.
So many people are now receiving "Spamblock verification" they don't want
the duplicates. I want to override the listserve's settings for duplicate
replies.

MLM is still a mystery to me. It seems when there are 2
dupees in the "To" field the List Addy ends up in the "cc" field:

I try to prevent this by setting up MLM:

but it's not doing what it should. Am I doing it right?

After setting up MLM, and choosing "Override the list's reply default/
Always reply to the list" on the Advanced page,

JUST CLICK REPLY, NOT "REPLY ALL".

There's no such capability of "overriding Reply All" defaults, and you don't
need to worry about it. If the message actually came to you from the mailing
list, then it doesn't matter how many other recipients there were. Clicking
"Reply" will reply to the mailing list. (In fact, clicking Reply even to a
second copy that may have been sent to you directly will still reply to the
mailing list. since Entourage uses the "To" field, not the "From" field, for
registered mailing lists.

If there's an occasion when you really want to reply privately, not to the
list, you can still do so by choosing "Reply to Sender" in Message menu, or
cmd-opt-R. But to reply to the list, just click Reply or cmd-R. I have _all_
my mailing lists set up this way so I never have to think about it. And it
always works. Never Reply to All.

Please "Reply To Newsgroup" to reply to this message. Emails will be
ignored.

PLEASE always state which version of Entourage you are using - 2001 or X.
It's often impossible to answer your questions otherwise.

Eureka! That does it, thanks Paul.
Never Reply to All.
OK, that's a winner.

Thanks to Paul Berkowitz for explaining this to me.

Now the Mailing List Manager identifies the listserver address as the
sender, all others are ignored. Yippee! I'm doing this to all 6 of my lists.

The default behavior:
"Reply" sends to Sender.
"Reply All" sends to Sender AND List

New improved Mailing List Manager behavior:
"Reply" sends to the List.
"Reply All" sends to Sender AND List

This will prevent bouncebacks from spamfilters too, which I'm getting loads
of lately.

Thanks to Paul Berkowitz for explaining this to me.

That's not what I said to do. I said you should check "Always reply to the
List", not "Always reply to the sender".

That's because a recent update of Entourage lets you register "newsletter"
type things as mailing lists too. It won't work that way with earlier
versions of Entourage. The "ignored" part is because you are clicking
"Reply" rather than "Reply to All".
The default behavior:
"Reply" sends to Sender.
"Reply All" sends to Sender AND List

New improved Mailing List Manager behavior:
"Reply" sends to the List.
"Reply All" sends to Sender AND List

BEST Mailing List Behavior:

Check "Always Reply to the List" in Advanced Page of Mailing List
Manager.

"Reply" sends to the List
"Reply All" sends to Sender AND List
"Reply to Sender" sends to the Sender
This will prevent bouncebacks from spamfilters too, which I'm getting loads
of lately.

AppleScript-Users mailing list is pretty rigorous about not allowing any
spambots in, so I doubt it will make any difference in that regard.
