When I receive a message and click on it, I get the message but there is no spot to reply. I have to hit Command R to enable the reply window to open.

You may have a customized toolbar for the e-mail window; you can get the
reply button back if you open a message and go to view in the menu and
choose customize toolbars, you should be able to put the reply button back.
