Replying with multiple POP accounts in Entourage

I utilize the work around steps to use Entourage 2004 with multiple
POP email accounts. Since Entourage does not separate the inboxes, I
created subfolders with rules to move emails into the correct
mailboxes. I realize that the other option is to view the pop email
folders as online folders but then I have to go in to delete those
emails from my ISP's server at some point.

I am satisfied with having to set up the subfolders and creating rules
for moving emails. I have run into an issue when I try to REPLY to an
email (that is not the "default' POP email account), the new email
being addressed defaults to the "default" POP email address. I can
click on the down arrow (in the FROM box) to select one of the other
email accounts from the list, but this is a hassle every single time I
need to reply to an email.

Is there a simple solution that would automate this? Like most email
programs, if I click on Reply to an email, it automatically replies
from that particular email account and not a default account. This
issue does not happen if you have IMAP or Hotmail accounts set up
within Entourage.

Any insight or solutions would be appreciated.

You shouldn't have to do that. There is an option in the Edit Account box
that will delete the message form the server when you delete it from
Entourage. But whatever way your comfortable with is obviously up to you.

You can select "Preferences" from the "Entourage" menu and then select the
"Reply & Forward" section, and uncheck "Reply using the default account"
option.

Thanks for the quick response Walt. The option "Reply using the default
account" is unchecked, but Entourage 2004 still continues to reply with the
default account even if the original email is received into one of the other
POP accounts.

That is because your mail server is consolidating all of the messages sent
to the various addresses into the one account that you download into. To
Entourage, all of these messages come from the same account despite the
different e-mail addresses, so the reply-to is from that account. One way to
solve this is to configure things so that [email protected] is a separate
mailbox on the server from [email protected], separate from [email protected]
etc. Another is to use the Other Account script on a repeating schedule.

I just did a couple quick tests. At first I thought I had the same results
as you did. But then I saw my mistake.

I used my hotmail account, and two separate POP accounts. I used the hotmail
to send to what we'll call account A and account B.

I turned off my option to reply using default email account. I then sent two
messages from Hotmail, one to each account. Both arrived, and I hit reply to
both. Each one resulted in a new message, sent by Account A (default
account).

I thought maybe I have to restart Entourage, so I quit and restarted. Then
I realized that I had Account B set up to forward anything it receives to
Account A (and consequently slapped myself).

I used a 3rd POP account, we'll call Account C, and sent a message from
hotmail to it. Presto - it worked. I hit "reply" and and the reply message
came up with Account C's account.

So with that in mind, do you know if you have any email forwarding? If not,
perhaps a restart of Entourage would kick it in gear?

Thanks for your replies. My mail server considers does not consolidate the
two email accounts. I have not had this issue with any other email program
before. It is an issue with Entourage because iMail does not do this
either.

I checked into the 'forward' option to see if it is set, and there are no
forward options set within either POP email account. I also Quit and
Restarted Entourage and my Powerbook and the same issue continues when I try
to reply from a POP email account that is not the default account. I
believe this is an inherent problem in Entourage 2004. For now, I'll try to
remember to change the reply from email address if I'm not using the default
account each time I send an email. I will also plan to send Entourage's
tech support an email explaining the situation to see if they believe this
is a bug in the software. Thanks again for your posts.

I don't think this is a problem inherent in Entourage because it works for
me. With that one option unchecked, whenever I hit reply, it uses that
accounts email account to reply with.

There has to be something else we are overlooking. Carefully scrutinize each
account's settings.

If you could, I'd like you to email me a copy of the headers of one of the
emails that when you reply to, it does this.

No, I think Dave must be correct. Are all of your "separate POP accounts"
actually in the same domain on your own server? It sounds to me too as if
they're all really the same account.

Take a look at "Reply Rerouted Account X" script for a way to set these up
so they reply automatically from the correct account. (You just have to get
used to pressing control-R instead of command-R or clicking Reply button.)
