Reputation of Access Databases

I love Access, its rapid development, easy to gets your hand on the
data, easy to make quick updates.
The problem I have however is that access seems to have a reputation
of not being heavyweight enough to support critical systems. I'm
concerned that people might be frightened of running business critical
systems on Access as opposed to SQL/Oracle.

I know its possible to change the Microsoft Access window icon, but I
wonder if its possible to hide/change the words Microsoft Access so it
looks like a normal application.

Being deceitful is hardly a good solution. The concerns you mention are
legitimate ones and you can get all of the advantages of Access you describe
above and ALSO store the data in SQL Server or Oracle. This is not an
either/or question for your users.

You (and they) need to realize the choice of tool used to produce the
interface application is not the same as the choice of tool used to store
the data. The fact that Access provides an easy all-in-one default database
engine does not mean that this is your only option.

They should be deciding what platform is appropriate to store their data on.
Then you can build them an application with Access that uses the database
engine they have chosen.
