Restart numbering problem

J

JSM

Hi,

I have styles called Numbered Heading Level 1-5 which are set up with
outlined numbering. I also have styles called Numbered Body Text 1-5 which
are based on the Numbered Heading Level style in order to keep the numbering
in sequence. The problem is when I restart numbering from Numbered Body Text
2 (for example), the style switches to Numbered Heading Level 2. Is there
any way to get around this?

Cheers,

John

Hi John

The problem is that when you try to restart the numbering, you are
reapplying the list template which is linked to the Heading styles, so
applying the numbering applies the linked style too.

Basing one numbered style on another, so as to share the numbering, will
only work if you can leave the numbering untouched once it has been set up -
but since there is a circularity in the definitions it's probably a bit
dangerous to rely on it anyway. You might find List Styles (so you apply the
numbering style separately from the heading/body text styles) or LISTNUM
fields a better approach. Alternatively you need to use another way of
restarting the numbering. I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to do
here, but you may find this helpful

Margaret,

Thanks for your reply. What I basically want is to be able to use two styles
(a heading style and body text style) which both use the same outline
numbering.

Eg:

1.0 Heading Style
1.1 body style
1.2 body style
1.2.1 Heading Style
1.2.2 body style
2 Heading style
2.1 body style

etc etc

If I restart numbering at any level I need it to remain in the same style.

Reading your response I guess my only real choice is using LISTNUM fields. I
haven't used these before so I'm sure it will be fun :)

Cheers,

John
