Restart numbering rests style

I'm running Word 2003.

I've created a numbered list style.
When I use the style for a second time in the document the numbering picks
up from where it left off previously.
I use the 'restart numbering' option and it restarts. However it also
destroys my custom style by setting it back to the default.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try a different method to restart numbering, for example LISTNUM fields. See
