retrieving messages more than once

A strange thing happened to me today (for the second time in as many weeks).

First off, I'm using Entourage 2004, POP, and I have it set to leave
messages on the server for 14 days.

When Entourage checked mail, it brought down everything on the server,
including messages that I have already downloaded/read. Of these, one was
truly new, and 100 had been previously downloaded.

I never had this problem with in the month that I used it leading up to my
use of Entourage 2004. Prior to that, I used Eudora in a similar fashion
(POP, leave messages on server for 14 days) for two years with no problems.
Thus, I doubt it's a problem on the server side.

Has anyone seen/experienced anything like this?

Does anyone know what could be causing it?

Does anyone have any ideas how I can avoid this in the future?

It's annoying to have to delete all of these already-dealt-with messages.

As a quick followup to my initial post, I did notice this morning that, for
some reason, everything in my inbox was missing the little icon indicating
that it was still on the server, even if these messages actually *were*
still on the server. Shortly thereafter, everything got re-downloaded.
Entourage seems to have "forgotten" that these messages are the same as
those on the server.

I have not compressed, rebuilt, or otherwise messed with my database
recently, so I don't think that could be the cause.

It's usually your ISP's "POPper" which is malfunctioning - not recognizing
that it has already downloaded that message to that particular
computer/email client already. It's supposed to mark the message as "read"
but doesn't always do an accurate job of it.

It might be worth adding this rule:

If <Specific header> <Status> <Contains> <R>

Then <Change Status> <Read>

but chances are that there is no "R" status and that's why it's being
downloaded again.

See if you can get an IMAP account, or a better ISP.
