Return receipts for emails? I can in Outlook but not Entourage

Morning,

I'm attempting to generate emails via Entourage such that I can get a
return receipt sent back to me when the recipient reads the mail. I
know how to do this in Outlook and have done so for several years in
various versions of Outlook, but I haven't figured out to do this so
far in Entourage. Any advice? Better mail clients than Entourage?

I'm running OS X 10.4 and Entourage 2004.

Thanks - Mark

Entourage doesn't include the ability to request a return receipt on a
message-by-message basis, but you can add the header manually to your
account. Go to Tools > Accounts, and open your mail account. Click the
"Advanced" tab, and under "Additional Headers", type in
"Disposition-Notification-To" (without the quotes) under Header, and your
e-mail address under Value.

You can just leave in this header if you want to request a return receipt
with all outgoing mail. If you want to just request receipts on some sent
messages, leave your regular account alone, then go to Tools > Accounts, and
create a new account. If the Assistant shows up, select "Configure Account
Manually". Then select POP as the account type, and click OK. Name the
account the account name with "Return Receipt" or something like that.

Now, create an account with your name, your e-mail address, and the correct
SMTP server settings, leaving the POP server settings blank. Click the
"Options" tab, and manually enter in the "Disposition-Notification-To"
header as the header and your e-mail address as the value.

Then, when you compose a message, you can simply select the return receipt
account from the "From" pop-up menu to request a return receipt.

Note that this is not a particularly reliable procedure because not all mail
clients recognize & honor return receipt requests, and users can often
choose whether or not they'll be sent.
