RTF export from Word

I have a large .DOC file. If I Save As .rtf, Word cannot then open the new
file ("Word cannot read the formatting ..."
This occurs in both Word2000 and Word2002 and is clearly a bug. Any ideas ?
I've tried cutting the file into sections to isolate the problem without
luck. My own .rtf reader reads the file without problems.
