Ruler in Word 2000 missing tick marks

Recently the horizontal ruler in the application in question has gone
mostly blank. Except for the first inch, the tick marks on the ruler
have disappeared and I can't restore them.

This is what I've tried so far:

Repair install
Uninstall and reinstall from scratch
Delete normal.dot and repair
Install service packs
Tried setting UseCharacterUnit = False

None of these corrected the error.

I have a screenshot available to give you a visual idea of what's going
on.

Umm, I don't see how this has anything to do with my problem. Still, I
looked for the procedure written on that web page, but Word 2000 didn't
have anything like that and didn't point to a solution.

Matthias,

You are totally right, sorry. My mistake.

Update:

I uninstalled Office 2000 then went through the registry and manually
deleted just about every every key with the keyword "office" in it.

Then I reinstalled Office 2000 fresh, without any of the service packs.

Voilà! The ruler is back to normal.

It seems rather that Uninstallation does not always take out old
registry entries related to the software. How naughty of you Microsoft.

I'm hoping this reversal will "keep", and keep an eye on the ruler for
this kind of thing happening again ... and if it does, try to track
down what might have caused it in the first place.

Thanks all.

Oh also, I also hunted down and deleted every file folder that I
figured was related to Office 2000, and deleted them too. (I lost my
custom macros and toolbars but I can always rebuild those).

Well from these symptoms, I'd say that you have a corrupt Word DATA key in
the registry and deleting that data key and restarting Word would have
resolved the problem. Uninstalling or reinstalling Office rarely (probably
never) repairs anything. There is an eraser2000.exe utility created by
Microsoft for completely removing Office 2000. Don't forget to reinstall all
the servicepacks.
