Rules for Outgoing Mail

Entourage 2004 on a MAC

I am trying to use a rule for outgoing mail and set up something simple
to test it. My simple test rule applies to 'all messages' and says
Copy the message to a folder on my machine called Outgoing. I send a
message, and then look into this folder. Nothing is there.

Most of my outgoing mail uses IMAP acocunts, and in those accounts I
have specified on the Advanced tab, that sent messages are filed in the
Sent Messages folder on the IMAP server.

Any ideas about what I might be doing wrong? I have searched Entourage
Help to no avail.

May be a bit of an obvious question, but did you create the rule under the
'outgoing' pane of the rules dialog? (you'd be surprised how many people get
caught out by this)

Yes, I did. When I now go to Rules under the Tools menu, and then
click on the Outgoing tab, I see my rule.

When I display the rule with Edit, the If portion reads Execute if any
criteria are met; All messages. The Then portion reads Copy Message
(to) Outgoing (on my computer). Outgpoing is a folder I created for
this purpose. It is always empty, no matter how many messages I send.

Enabled is checked.

Has your 'outgoing' folder got any filters set (like 'unread only' or
'flagged only')? Look in the 'View' menu.

AHA! I went to one IMAP account setting and un-checked the Advanced
option to put sent items in the Sent Messages folder on the IMAP
server, and voila, the rule worked! I sent a test message and it
turned up in my local folder that I had created for this purpose.

Since my ultimate purpose is to have a

I checked and it has no such filters set.

Is there some recipe you could recommend for starting completely over,
creating a folder for outgoing items, creating a simple rule, etc just
to see that outgoing rules are in effect?

Also, do you have any thoughts about whether the fact that I use IMAP
acccounts and have specified that they put outgoing items into the
IMAP Sent Messages folder, has some bad effect upon the operation of
the outgoing rule?
