Rules Wont Work At ALL!

I have set a number of rules in Outlook 2003.
Initially, they appeared to work just fine.
Now none of them work and even new rules wont work.
They are very simple text blocking rules which are to delete messages with
specified words.
I have McAfee Virus checker running also. Would there be a conflict?
Any advice or assistance would be very welcome.

no, its unlikely the AV program causing it. Are the rules checked but don't
seem to apply to the incoming messages or does outlook remove the check from
each rule (because they failed)?

The rules have an X beside them and I cannot get it to turn off.
Any suggestions?
