Rules

I guess I need help on how to do rules or I have a mis-understanding of how they work.

I created a rule that basically did:

1. Criteria was is Applied to all messages "From" "is" a particular email address, which I entered.

then next action was

2. "Reply" with "Reply text" (Not accepting messages from the sender" I assume it would send an email back to the email address in the "From" box.

Well it doesn't do any of this. I get the email and nothing else happens. I checked this by sending an email from another online (Yahoo) email account to my normal email address.

What am I doing wrong or does it not work this way?

I think your understanding is correct, if I understand you correctly.

Allow me to offer some general guidelines for debugging rules that may help
you. To debug rules like this you need to break things down and test
individual components, both the selection criteria and the action.

To test selection criteria:

1. Testing for "From" a particular address, pick any incoming message you
may have, and define a rule to select on its sender's address. Make sure the
rule is not enabled (checkbox is unchecked).

2. Define the action to something innocuous such as, "Display Dialog 'Found
a match'".

3. Select your incoming message, and then apply the rule manually. Keep
testing until you get the dialog. If you make a typo in the address to match
on, or include a trailing space, it won't match.

To test your "reply to" action:

1. Set up another test rule; for this one, make the criteria "All messages".

2. Set up the "Reply to" message for the action. Make sure the rule is NOT
enabled!

3. Select a message you have sent to yourself, and apply the rule manually
to it. If you have set the action up correctly, this should generate a reply
message to yourself.

Once you have both criteria and action debugged, combine the two into a
single rule, and enable it. You should be in business.

1. Criteria was is Applied to all messages "From" "is" a particular email
address, which I entered.

Try assigning a category to that contact. Now in your rule,

From is in category xxx

Rather than from is email address.

Does it work?

I had a problem with rules to.

I created several rules. After I had shut down and came back in the morning all my rules were gone and my spell check does not stay checked. It just wont work. Is there a way to highlight and then spell check ? I have this in every web browser and word but not entourage (

Oh yes back to the rules issues. All my email is being delivers to a sub folder now too.

Thans for any help
