Same mail on 2 machines

I am trying to see if it is possiable to have the same e-mail account
running on 2 computers at the same time so if an e-mail comes in,
both people will see it and if on or the other persons sends something
it is saved to the sent mail file on both machines

IMAP will do this, although a user marking a message as Read on one machine
will mark it as Read on the other.

That is exactly what I need but what is IMAP? A program or a plug in? Is
it an Apple Product? Thanks.
