scheduled macro just hangs...

I have a macro in Access 2000 that I had scheduled to execute every day at
11pm. The macro runs fine if executed manually. It also runs fine if I right
click on the scheduled task and click RUN. The last command in the macro
exits the database without saving changes. The macro queries a few linked
tables and spits the results out to two excel files.

About once a week, on random nights, the macro will start to execute, but
not finish. It will not create the spreadsheets at all. These tables ARE
linked. Whenever this happens (or doesn't happen in this case), I'll check
the 'scheduled items' and notice that the item's status is RUNNING.

This is an Access 2000 database with linked tables to an Access 97 database
on a different server. Again, this only seems to happen once a week or so,
and at random times.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?
