screen locks "Preparing for Standby"

My screen locks with message "preparing for standby"
I have to pull out plus and battery pack in order to re-boot.
I also have lost microsoft explorer functionality. Somehow, when I depress
the M/S explorer key - it goes to "my documents."

WTF does this have to do with OFFICE?
