search problem in address book

Ernest Hutton

When I type an 'a' to go to the 'a' file in my address book it goes to
the top of the list, which in my case are miscellaneous email
addresses without a personal name followed by company names without a
personal name. Then I have to scrolldown, which is a time consuming
hassle. If I type 'b' or any other letter, it goes straight to that
file. Can anyone help me?

So it does. It's a bug, at least in Entourage 2004, where I am now.

In previous versions, contacts without either a first or last name also
appeared at the top when sorted by name, but the Name column was blank, as
you might expect. In 2004, the Name column now has - in descending order of
priority until it hits a non-blank field - Nickname, Company, email address,
instant message address. So now when you search for "Apple" or
"[email protected]" in the QuickSearch box , you'll find the relevant item
even if it has no First or Last Name. But the Name column has not been
resorted to intersperse these entries alphabetically. They're still sitting
at the top, in a totally mixed-up order. This denotes a new feature that was
done "on the cheap" without being thought through thoroughly - it would
probably be much more work to do it right. I'm not very impressed by seeing
a half-botched job here.

Anyway, typing "a" seems to be interpreted as "go to the beginning" instead
of "go to a...". That's a bug - I'm sure that could be fixed quite easily. I
don't know if the same bug exists in Entourage X (probably) where the name
field is blank for these contacts. But it looks even wronger in 2004 where
the Name field for the top contact might be starting with an "m" or "x" or
anything at all. Of course, if they'd fix the alphabetization then it
wouldn't matter: the top contact _would_ be starting with a "a", regardless.
