"Search timeout" missing in "Options tab" under Accounts

When I click on the options tab for my account (Tools/accounts), I do
not get the options that are shown in the help info. I want to get to
the slider for "search timeout" but it is nowhere to be found. I'm
using Entourage 11.4.0, on OS 10.4.11.

That setting only applies to a Directory Services account and not to a
POP, IMAP nor Exchange account. It's only useful if you're connecting to
an LDAP service to retrieve contact information in an LDAP database.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, Bill.

Our local cable company is often too overloaded to send out mail. I
have to keep instructing Entourage to send, and send again, until the
outbox is finally empty. This is annoying. My husband, who uses a
Windows PC, is able to set "search timeout" to 30 minutes, so that he
doesn't have to do this. His computer will keep trying to send for 30
minutes, and that's usually enough. Is there any way in Entourage (or
on my Mac) for me to be able to instruct my computer to keep sending
out for an extended length of time?

Your messages will stay in your Outbox until they are sent. You don't
need to (and can't) adjust anything. Unless you're sending messages with
multi-megabyte attachments then sending should be fairly quick even if
your cable Internet connection's traffic is heavy.

You can adjust your Tools --> Schedules... to shorten the Send & Receive
All schedule to connect more often but you shouldn't need to just for
sending.

I suspect you have something else causing the problem. If you're trying
to use your ISP's E-mail service then check whether or not you're
authenticating to send mail. If you're a laptop user then you may have
used settings that require authentication for sending while you're away
from home but this will cause delays when sending while you're already
at home. Try using no SMTP authentication while at home.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, Bill, for your constructive and detailed answer.

Yes, I am on a laptop, and in Mexico for half the year, so I do need
to use a mail service that requires authentication to send out. So
that explains the problem a bit.

I've been able, through Schedules, to instruct Entourage to send mail
every 10 minutes, and that seems to have solved the problem of mail
just sitting in my Outbox and not going out.
