Searching by my name

When I come back to this board to find responses to my threads I usually
find easiest thing to do is a search by subject. What would be even easier,
not sure possible, is to search by my name, which then list all my threads.
Only problem is that then I only see my e mails, not the responses from you
guys! Is there any trick to then see your responses, after a search by
name, ie, the whole flattened thread, complete? Thanks!

You can create a similar effect using a Custom View.
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/custom_views/index.html#mythread>

When you've opened the Custom View, you can use the filter box in the
upper-right corner to only display newsgroup messages; just change it to To
Contains microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage (or any other newsgroup).
Awesome Mickey:
Only thing is, that this custom view is only bringing up my questions, I'm
not seeing the replies. What is the configuration to see the replies?
Also, I unchecked to include deleted items folder, how get rid of sent items
folder as well ?
Thanks!

Best way to accomplish this is to set up a custom view to look at the
'references' header.

This header only applies to newsgroups, and usually takes the form:
References: <BCF74722.26F2%[email protected]>
<BCF75DED.19C1A%[email protected]>
<BCF6F496.68FBA%berkowit@spoof_silcom.com>
<BCF78CDB.271D%[email protected]>
<BCF71E31.6901E%berkowit@spoof_silcom.com>

As you can see, all the IDs of messages in the thread should end up in this
header, so you only need to look at this header for your email address.

Therefore, you can set up a custom header to look for (in my case):

<Specific Header> [references] <contains> [[email protected]]

This will give me a view of messages in all newsgroups that contain my email
address in the reference field - i.e. All threads in which I have taken
part. View the results sorted/grouped by subject and you have a nice
hierarchical view of all your threads.

The next trick is to make this work for only one newsgroup :) Normally, you
can select a folder to check within a custom view. This does not work for
newsgroups! However, there is a way round it.

In the newsgroup listing, select a message. Then, hit opt-cmd-F to do an
advanced find. You can now select 'search this folder only', and the current
newsgroup name will be supplied as default. Enter your search criteria and
hit the 'find' button. When the search results window comes up you can
choose 'save as custom view' in the toolbar. This custom view (named 'search
results' by default) has now been created with the selection criteria
restricted to a single newsgroup.

Another way is simply to add another criterion when making the custom view,
with "match if ALL criteria are met":

<Specific header> <Newsgroups> <Contains>
<microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage>

or whichever newsgroup this view applies to.

Yes, you can do it that way, but it is a lot slower than the other way,
because the CV still has to scan ALL messages (news & mail) to see if they
conform to the correct selection criteria. By tricking the 'search this
folder only' setting it only has to check that one folder.

Nice:
Seems to work, but main big problem, is it is leaving out several of the
older posts, I think. For example with the custom view of thread "need
toolbars back' in Excel, the oldest post is by JE on 6/11. But my original
post on 6/9 is not there. But it is there is I use the traditional filter
search method.

Now in custom view:

Also, any way to delete or not see certain threads?

No way to color code which replies have not been seen yet?

Any way not to have the sent items on the bottom?

Exist a real e mail notification? Thanks!

Also , doubt this is possible, but it makes this perfect, is not only have
it sorted by subject name, which is critical, but having the thread which I
created most recently at top of the list and my oldest threads at bottom of
the list.

That's right, it will not display messages in a thread before you posted,
since it looks for your email address in the references field, and this can
only happen after someone replies to one of your messages in that thread.

It should be possible, by applescript, to create a list of all your threads
and flag all messages in those threads. Then you could view flagged messages
only...

I'll think about that...

That's not too good, because if no one responds for awhile, you won't see it
listed at all.

Also, just tested this while thing and do not see a recent post, but I can
find it traditional way with filter (maybe there is a lag when using custom
view)

I'm filter is still best -- unless there is some e mail notification.

That won't work. It would look like
Match if all criteria are met
Specific Header References Contains [email protected]
From Contains [email protected]
Specific Header Newsgroups Contains microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage

This Custom View would only display your replies to threads that you've
already participated in, not messages from others or your original queries.
You'd be better off using the Custom View Dave and I recommended, using
Barry's method of showing only one newsgroup. After that, you can use the
Grouping tools in View -> Arrange By to make the view sort as you please,
either by one of the simple arrangements or a custom arrangement.
