Seeing receipts

A

Andy McMullin

Far various reasons I have a need to know if e-mails have been
received/read. I know that receipts are not part of the standard for rfc822
e-mail but I followed the instructions found elsewhere in this list and
added the header "Disposition-notification-to" and thought that would do it.

Well it does but not for Entourage!!

If I look at my inbox with OWA, IMAP or Outlook (on a PC) I see a job lot of
notifications.

If I look at the same inbox with Entourage 2004, I don't see them at all!

Anyone know how to get Entourage to show disposition notifications?
Alternately, any other way of checking that mail has been seen/read/deleted
with an Exchange 2003 server?

TIA

Hi !!
1. You can reply to return Receipts in Ent 2004 by setting up a rule to
auto-reply to an email if it had the disposition-notification-to header.

2. If it still doesn't work, we can try to download a third party
applescript that sends receipts from called Return Receipt

http://macscripter.net/scriptbuilders/category.php?start_record=60&cat=54

How to use applescript:
- Download the applescript (Request Receipt 1.0) to your Macintosh and
expand it.
Then, you will see a folder named as "Request Receipt". Please copy all the
files
in this folder to [Hard drive] \User\ [Current User Name]\ Documents\
Microsoft
User Data\ Entourage Script Menu Items.

- Now launching Entourage, create a new message, click Script Menu and
select
Request Receipt item.

Waiting for the response

I think Andy's problem is that the receipts his Exchange server is
generating are not showing up in his Entourage inbox, even though he can see
them with OWA.

I've never tried requesting receipts, but I can try to duplicate the problem
at work on Monday.

That's exactly it. I can't see them with Entourage, I can see them with OWA

Thanks for that Walt. I can send receipts and respond to receipt requests
just fine. What doesn't work (and your pages don't mention) is the ability
to view the receipt that has been returned.

As I said, if I view my Inbox using OWA, IMAP or Outlook I see a message
that corresponds to the receipt I requested. If I use Entourage I don't see
it.

Did you perform the steps on the next page?

I haven't tried that because it appears that the manual configuration
for accounts doesn't offer a choice for Exchange, so I'm just asking.
Can IMAP or something else be substituted for Exchange to make it
work? (I wouldn't expect it to.)

Thanks.

Nope -- because I put the header into my main outgoing account.

The first page of instructions sets up a rule to respond to reply requests
(by using a rule), the second to set up an additional account that issues
the requests. I want to issue the requests from my main account, so that's
where I put the header.

Neither page seems to have anything to do with viewing the received
receipts.

Well, for my first test, I used Outlook to compose a message with receipts
requested. Got both receipts, and they show in Entourage.

For my second test, I used Entourage to compose a message with the DNT
header. But the receipt isn't coming through anywhere -- Outlook, OWA, or
Entourage.

So I'm afraid I can't be of much help.

Running Exchange 5.5, accessed using IMAP.

Adam,

Thanks for trying. Our Exchange is 2003 and I'm accessing using Entourage as
its default OWA and Outlook as whatever silly protocol it uses under
Windows.

I have the same problem. The receipts that I've requested are being
sent and and received (OWA displays them) but Entourage 2004 won't
download or otherwise display them. I certainly hope this is fixed
soon. I have to use both clients in the meantime.

I know I've received them because OWA and Outlook (on a PC) show them.
Entourage shows nothing.

Could you add an additional rule(s) to the one you already have for
acceptign return receipts? The rules I have on my site will give you an
alert when a receipt is requested. You could add on to that rule by
having the particular email copied or moved to a special folder, marked
as unread so you'll get a number in parenthesis until you go in and
mark it as read.

Just a thought.

Walt,

Thanks for the idea. I tried it and it didn't seem to work.

The problem with it seems to be that rules only apply to e-mails entourage
can "see" and it ignores responses to reply-receipts for some reason. Maybe
it interprets that they're not e-mails or something.

Oh well. Another "bugette" (a tiny bug).

Yes, that is it. Entourage only downloads items of type=mail and these are
receipts are not considered mail on the server for some reason.

Ahhh. So now we know what's happening. Anyone know if we poor mortals can
alter this behaviour? Or do we have to ask Microsoft very nicely?
