Send and Open Receipt option in Entourage?

P

Paul Kirtley

Will Entourage (Microsoft Office 2004) generate receipts for mail that has
been received and opened by the other party?

My PC counterparts can do this. I can't see where this can be done in
Entourage.

If not, why is this not a function of Entourage?

Thanks,

No, it doesn't. You have to set up a rule to identify incoming mail that
requests receipts. Instructions for doing so are here:
<http://www.basilweb.net/macoffice/receipt1.html>

If you mean that you want mail you send to send a receipt when it's read,
you need to add the header manually. Be warned though that not all clients
will send a receipt even if the user has read the message.

I can't speak for the Mac Business Unit at Microsoft who make Entourage.

I followed these directions exactly, using a duplicate of my existing POP
mail account, other than adding the additional header, then sent myself an
email with a return receipt requested with this new account. When I opened
the email with Entourage, I got no prompt for a receipt. Nothing happened
other than normal. This is not the behaviour on Outlook 2003, where a prompt
asks if you want to send a return receipt to sender. What am I missing.
I'm using OS 10.3.7 with Entourage 2004.

That's right, Entourage doesn't recognize or acknowledge these requests by
default. If an Entourage user wants to know when a received message has a
receipt requested, the user needs to set up a rule:
<http://www.basilweb.net/macoffice/receipt1.html>

I have one like that set up. My rule marks messages that request receipts
with a special category so that I know to reply to them. I don't like the
idea of Entourage doing it automatically without asking me.

That's strange. Those are exactly the steps I followed because I went
to the basilweb site and followed those directions to set up the rule
detailed there. Still doesn't work for me. It may be part of a larger
problem. My rules don't seem to work consistently. I have a "family"
rule that is supposed to move anyone who is in the category "family" to
a "family" mailbox. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This
despite the fact that I've verified that each sender is indeed
categorized "family" in the Contacts section of Entourage 2004.

Probably bleeding obvious, but double-check to be sure you have the Any and
All conditions buttons set properly.
