Send & Receive downloads all my old messages

I use Entourage with my Gmail (POP) account. A few weeks ago, when I did a
send and receive, it started downloading all my messages from 2005. I
already have these messages in my account, but it doesn't seem to realise
this. At first I let it continue to download thinking I can just delete the
duplicates and eventually my new mail will come through. But I'm working in
Africa with a dial up connection, at this rate it's going to take a year
before I start getting this weeks messages!

So far I ran the database utility, and it said my database was fine.

Is there anywhere I can get a script I could get to just download the mail
for the last couple of weeks? Then I can alter my options on my gmail
account so I only have POP access for mail from now on, and I should be able
to continue to use Entourage normally.

I'm running Entourage on Mac OS 10.4, and have downloaded the latest Office
update.

Please Help.

Unfortunately, there si little you can do.

POP mail is designed to be deleted from the server when downloaded. The
'leave on server' setting is a bit of a hack, to be honest (even though it
is adopted by most mail clients) and is far from reliable. I often find that
every few months it will randomly download all the mail on the server for
some reason. This may be due to the resetting of message counts on the
server, or may be some quirk of the mail transport system or may be an
entourage bug. I don't know.

However, there is nothing you can do to stop the process now! You could set
the account to 'allow online access' and just get the latest emails for now,
but at some point, they are all going to be downloaded again!

To tidy up afterwards, I do have a 'remove duplicates' script available on
my scripts page:
