Send Via IMAP (Apple .Mac)

Could someone please explain to me why Entourage is not set up to send
outgoing IMAP email, e.g., .Mac. I get an error message every time. I can
see that there is no "Outbox." My email must be sent via Earthlink, my POP
ISP.

I could send via either POP or IMAP in Apple's Mail app. Why?

You may be able to send from Entourage if you turn on SMTP authentication in
the advanced sending prefs for your .Mac account.

However, some ISPs prevent you from connecting to any other SMTP server
except theirs when you are on their network. In that case, you can create a
"send only" account that uses your ISP's SMTP server, but has your .Mac
e-mail address in it. This is what I do.

FWIW, when you send, you are always using SMTP. POP and IMAP are both
*receive only* protocols.

I send all my mac.com mail via IMAP/SMTP in Entourage. First of all, you
have to set up you .Mac account as IMAP - perhaps you have. (If not, delete
the POP account and set it up as IMAP.)

The SMTP server for .Mac is

smtp.mac.com

NOT

mail.mac.com

Then you have to click "Click here for Advanced sending options" and check
"SMTP server requires authentication" and "Same settings as receiving
server".

***However, I believe that Earthlink won't let you send from another SMTP
server - they're afraid of relaying spam. It's Earthlink that's stopping
this from working. I'm not sure how Mail.app gets around that. Perhaps this
way:

Make an IMAP account for ,Mac, but set the SMTP server to be the earthlink
smtp server, whatever that is. I think that should still work, even filing
Sent mail on the .Mac server if set up that way. Probably someone here with
earthlink can confirm or provide another solution.
