Sending Mail from Public Hot Spots

B

Bruce Epps

Does anyone know if there is a way to send mail from within Entourage
2004 while online at a public hot spot? I can always receive mail
with no problem, and I know I could use webmail. But whenever I try
to send a message in Entourage (from say a coffee cafe, hotel room,
etc.) I get an error message about relaying being denied. A Road
Runner tech said there's no way to do this, since you would have to
keep changing the setting for your outgoing mail server in your
Entourage prefs. Anyone know differently?

You don't say what version of OS X you are running (assuming you are!), but
all versions of OS X include a mail server of their own - either SendMail
(10.0 - 10.2.x) or Postfix (10.3.x)

Check on Versiontracker for utilities called 'sendmail enabler' or 'postfix
enabler' which are simple one-click (for sending only) set up utilities to
turn on the mail server.

Then, you just need to set up Entourage to use 127.0.0.1 (or, 'localhost')
as the SMTP server for each account, and the mail will be delivered
directly, however you are connecting.

You need to ask your ISP, the one in your email address. You want to send to
an "authenticated server". It's possible if you just enable "SMTP Server
requires authentication" in the Advanced Sending dialog it will magically
work.
If it doesn't, ask your ISP what server to send it to, for example Earthlink
normally takes mail at smtp.earthlink.net when you are using Earthlink ISP,
but when using any other ISP send to smtpauth.earthlink.net using
authentication.

Well, my SMTP server allows me to use it from any internet connection with
password authentication. Does RoadRunner not allow you to do password
authentication for sending mail? In your account settings under "Sending
Mail" down at the bottom, click the advanced sending options and put in your
ISP name and password. It may work.

Many ISPs block (or don't offer) that. That's the reason why Barry's
suggestion to use either Sendmail or Postfix is nice. You can send mail
no matter where you are. I've been using these solutions for a while now
and could not be more delighted.
