Sending & Receiving Error - Outlook 2002

I'm repeatedly getting an Sending & Receiving reported
error 0x8004210b - timed out while waiting for response
from SMTP server". I'm using Outlook 2002 with XP
professional.

I checked the help archives, and there seems to be a
known issue with linksys routers that cause this error,
but (to my knowledge) I am not using a linksys router, I
only have an efficient networks speedstream 5100 DSL
modem.

I contacted my ISP who informs me that there is no
network issues, and I disabled my firewall and still
received the same sending error. A reboot did not correct
the issue.

The only thing that I can think of that is different from
when my email was working and now (with the error) are
some XP security patches that I downloaded and installed
(I should have noted what I installed, but I didn't - my
mistake). Is this a known problem with a fix?

Thanks.

What are your outgoing server authentication settings? Does your ISP
require that you use the incoming settings to authenticate before sending?

I authenticate both outgoing and incoming mail servers.

Incoming seems to be working, but outgoing is failing
on "larger" emails. My tests have been very crude, but
emails less tha 5k are going through fine, where emails
greater than 800k (an attachment) get the send error.

Very puzzling. Don't understand what has changed.

Do you have an Internet Firewall enabled to scan traffic? I am wondering if
the McAfee Firewall plays into this configuration?

I do have a firewall, Mcafee Personal Firewall Plus
version 5.0, API 5.0.1.5. Both firewall and virus scan.

I notice that even when I turn off the firewall, I still
have the send issue and error. But, to add confusion,
with firewall and virus scan disabled, the firewall is
still alerting me about repetative outbound email (I'm
sending the same test message while debugging). I would
think with the firewall disabled that it wouldn't detect
my outgoing email.

To top it all off, even though Outlook gives me an error
message and the mail stays in the draft box after
sending, the email is getting to the destination.

This is starting to sound like a Mcafee issue... any
other debug suggestions while I ping Mcafee?

Thanks for the help.
