I am switching from Windows to Mac and am still learning it. I bought and
downloaded Windows Office for Students 2004 which includes entourage. I
did the automatic set up wizard telling it to use my .Mac account as my
email address. It recieves just fine but will not send a message. I keep
getting an error message #3260 saying it could not send because I am not
connected to a network. I am not on a network but use dial up modem
connection. No matter how I change the settings I keep getting this error
but I recieve just fine. I do assume that this is supposed to send and recieve
like any other mail program. Am I wrong and I have to be part of a network
to use it. If so I guess I can get rid of it and use my Mac application but
since it recieves, I would think it would send. Any advise would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Earl, I'm no expert and have just switched from Windows to Mac too. I would
suggest that you check your SMTP server details if you can receive but not
send. Also, I just noticed this message - does it apply to your situation?

Go to Tools/Accounts/Mail/[your account]. At the bottom, make sure you have
smtp.mac.com as the sending server. Click Advanced Sending Options just
below, and check "SMTP server requires authentication" and "Use same
settings as receiving". (On the other hand, if you'd already set that, try
turning it off. This stuff is very peculiar. I always have to have it on at
home, but almost always have to turn it off in hotels!)

This kbase applies to Exchange only I believe. Anyway, the SMTP for .Mac
usually requires authentication. You might have forgotten to chose the
option in the advanced settings. Nevertheless, you can also chose to use
the SMTP server provided by your ISP for your .Mac account.

I
keep
getting an error message #3260 saying it could not send because I am not

connected to a network. [I think this message is just telling you that Entourage thinks you are not connected to the internet via your modem.]

No matter how I change the settings I keep getting this
error
but I recieve just fine. [Try changing the settings in Tools>Accounts>Edit>Options>Live Sync to "Connect at launch"]

I use Entourage to connect to my .mac account on two different
computers and haven't expereinced the same issue that you have, but it
sounds like it's not seeing the outgoing (smtp) server. Good luck.
