"Sent mail" has disappeared; opening it crashes Entourage

I'm using Office X and Mac OS 10.4.3. This morning I was having
difficulty sending one message with many attachments. I deleted
attachments one at a time and it still would not send. Finallyh, with
no attachments, the message was sent with no problem. I opened the
"sent messages" folder to check that it actually had gone. That folder,
which usually contains six months' worth of sent messages, showed the
one most recently sent, followed by a blank space in bluish gray, with
light horizontal lines.

I clicked on parts of the bluish gray space and a few of the older
messages appeared. Then I got the message "unknown error 4362", which
would not go away no matter how many times I clicked on the "ok" box in
the error message. Finally I restarted the machine.

Now, whenever I open the "sent messages" folder, I see the messages
sent since the one described above, and then Entourage crashes.

What in the world is going on?

Try rebuilding the database. In Entourage X, first go to Entourage > Turn
Off Office Notifications. Now, quit Entourage, and then restart Entourage
holding down the Option key. When the Rebuild dialog box comes up, choose
to do a Typical Rebuild. If that does not fix the problem, repeat the
procedure, instead opting to do the Advanced Rebuild.

Yes, that worked. Thank you. Now if I could only figure out what the
"office notifications" item is. On or off, I notice no difference!

Office Notifications is used to display reminders for tasks & calendar
events. If it is off, no reminders will appear while Entourage is not open.
Otherwise, reminders will still appear even if Entourage is not open.
