Serious Security risk with Outlook 2007

I've noticed a serious problem with Office Outlook 2007 in that if I move my
cursor over a hyperlink in a email (separate window), the status bar doesn't
show the actual address, as with previous versions of outlook express etc.

I cannot see where the hyperlink will send me and am flying blind. I could
be sent to a website with security risks.

WHY DID MICROSOFT REMOVE THIS HANDY FEATURE AND INCREASE THE SECURITY RISK?

Well, first and least, Outlook and Outlook Express are not related except in
that they have the word 'outlook' in the name of the product, so relating
Outlook's capabilities to Outlook Express' isn't valid.

That said, you don't get a tooltip containing the entire url when you hover
over the link?

If previous versions of Outlook showed the url in the status bar, I'd say
they *increased* the visibility by making it a tooltip rather than putting
it all the way at the bottom of the screen on the status bar which isn't
always turned on for all users.

To be honest, I'm not sure how one would turn it on since, afaik, it just
*is* on, so if you're not seeing it, it must be a feature from something
else, so, lets start digging:

What version of IE is installed on the box?
Is all of Office 2007 installed or just Outlook? If all of Office, what
happens if you go to Word 2007, Insert Hyperlink, put in text for Text to
Display and a URL for the Address and then point at the URL with the mouse
pointer?

Ok, two more questions:

1) If you exit outlook and go to start - run - outlook /safe, do you get
the tooltip if you hover over a link now?
2) Which Suite of Office 2007 did you install?

yes, that works .. so what's the difference between standard outlook and Safe
mode?

Also, evertime I right click the Outlook short cut I created, no menu comes
up? How do I setup 'outlook /safe' on my short cut??

Safe mode disables add-ins. Start up Outlook, go to Tools - Trust Center -
Add-ins, look at the Active Add-ins and start disabling one at a time until
you find the one that causes the tooltip not to work (select Manage: Com
Add-ins and the Go button to disable items).

You really don't. Safe mode is just for troubleshooting purposes, sort of
like Safe mode in windows. Now, the fact you can't right click the
shortcut, no idea. Can you right click any shortcuts?

I tried to disable most fo the add-ins but it wouldn't allow me, saying -
"The connected state of office Add-ins registered in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
cannot be changed". I was able to disable Google desktop, but after
re-running Outlook, it wasn't the cause of the problem. Others I couldn't
disable were McAfee adn all Microsoft add-ins.

non-safe mode .. ie, all active. .. and Cursor-over too tips work!??? Maybe

The add-in list isn't going to look any different. They add-ins are not
'disabled' per se, they simply aren't running.

I've emailed McAfee regarding this problem and they say it's not a McAfee
add-in problem, but a Outlook problem (surprise, surprise)

Strangely enough, sometimes, very rarely, when i move my sursor over a
hyperlink in an email, something will flash up very quickly and as quickly,
disappear. It looks the size of a help tip window. i'm just wondering whether
the timing of how long a tool-tip window appears has been set to zero? or
maybe a mouse setting is reset???

Thanks for help anyway .. I think this problem will have to go in the too
hard basket for time being, maybe if others have tihs problem, something
might have to be done?

Ok, as a lark, if you go into Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs (or if
it's vista, whatever the control panel applet is), is there an
OutlookAddinSetup listed there? If there is, could you remove it?

nope, just microsoft office Small Business 2007, and same but with 'primary
interop assemlies' and 'connectivity components' .. i'm not going to delete
them

i just run Office diagnostics, no problems.

Enough time spent on this problem, it will be fixed in time.

Hey, I have a similar problem: The URL tooltip popup used to work, but now I
just see a brief outline of it and it disappears instantly. I tried "outlook
/safe" and I get the same behavior. What controls the time the tooltip stays
visible?

I'm using Outllook 2007 under Viats Ultimate.

Dean , I still haven't had this problem fixed and it's annoying. i have to
copy each hyperlink then start a new window, copy the link, examine it
carefully .. luckily McAfee picks up most phishing emails .. but i would like
control.

Did you update your virus protection lately? new security system? it might
have ADDED-IN something into Outlook which effected your pop-ip windows.

I wasn't able to find anything regarding timing of message boxes, i think
thats a red herring. it might have to do with mouse settings although i
didn't find anything.

I wish Microsoft and McAfee would track this one down.

No, it still happens when I use Outlook /safe, which kills add-ins. I will
try turning off other security programs, though I don't think it's that,
either.
