Setup files for Office XP?

J

jmarsh1000

My PC is second-hand and came with XP Pro & Office XP pre-installed. I
only have a Windows CD (a silvery one, for XP Home, and I think that's
useless anyway!). I have made a backup copy of Office XP onto CD. I
gather that a reinstallation would require setup files. There are no
setup files in the relevant temporary area on the PC. Can I obtain the
setup files from anywhere? A (legit) copy of Office XP Students &
Teachers is obtainable...any use?

It would be, yes. But what you do is you go back to the seller and ask them
to furnish you with *ALL* the software that was supplied with the system
when *they* purchased it. It is against the EULA to resell a system without
the software (and vice versa). You are, currently, in possession of illegal
software (both Office /and/ Windows) and the seller is obligated to provide
you with the legitimate discs. If the seller is unwilling to do so, remind
them that the discs would be useless on another system and that he is
stealing from you because you did not get what you paid for (let me guess,
you bought this system from a seller on eBay, right...?)

Having said that, the legitimate XP CDs /are/ silvery. But, unless it has a
holographic label side (see
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/uk/windows/default.mspx) then
it's just a burnt disc and is, obviously, *NOT* legal.

In short, go back to the seller and _demand_ what you're legally entitled
to!

Thanks Miss Tick,

I suspected things were non-legit. The XP Home CD is; it's not
holographic.

I'll put an enquiry to the seller. I have a strong impression that
I've received all I'm going to get in this deal. I bought the PC from
a family friend who advertises locally; not on ebay as far as I'm
aware.

He also supplied non-legit software to the owner of the main family
PC... his A4 sheet of colour-coded numbers failed to perform as he
expected, so XP Pro retired after 30 days. Office XP was partially
usable and vulnerable to the justified anti-piracy measures pending
from Microsoft, re. updates. So we got rid of that. We bought a full
retail copy of XP Pro on ebay, registered & activated it, all OK. I
expect I'll do likewise.
