"show reply" link goes away

When I reply to an email, entourage links the original and the reply. In
v.X, there would be a hyperlink and text "You replied to this email on
*date*: show reply." In 2004, this link appears VERY briefly in the original
message header immediately after I send my reply, and then disappears.
Likewise, the reverse hyperlink "this message is a reply to a message you
sent on *date*: show original" disappears as well. This bug is very peculiar
and very frustrating, especially because I never had any problem like this
in v.X, but I've been dealing with this for months now. Please help.

Okay, I've found out that if I set my IMAP advanced settings to "save sent
messages on server," the entourage "show reply" link goes away once the
reply has been uploaded to the server "sent" folder, and is automatically
erased locally.

If I decheck the "save sent messages on server" option, then the "show
reply" link remains. However, now I cannot save my sent emails on the
server. This is quite ridiculous. Surely there must be a way to make this
work?

The IMAP server you're using must be a non-UIDPLUS server. If you're
referring to a mac.com (.Mac) account, that's precisely what you've got.
You can confirm for any IMAP server by selecting the account icon in the
Folders list and right-clicking (control-clicking) it, and choose "Get
Info". If the dialog window that comes up doesn't contain "UIDPLUS", it's
non-UIDPLUS.

Only UIDPLUS servers can track new messages on the server. With non-UIDPLUS
servers the messages can't be found, so the sent message can't be tracked
once it's been uploaded to the server.

You get what you pay for. I have two IMAP accounts myself. One is .Mac, and
I naturally have the same problem. Entourage knows I have replied to a
message but offers no link to the reply. (It can find original messages from
the reply, because those haven't been moved or created new.) My other IMAP
account is provided by my university and is a much better server than
..Mac's. (It's a Cyrus server.) I _do_ the links to the replies with this
account.

It's got nothing to do with Entourage. It's the type and quality of the IMAP
server, namely whether it has the UIDPLUS feature or not. And there's no
point complaining to Apple either. If you ever have the opportunity to get
an IMAP account from elsewhere, check if it's UIDPLUS or not.
