Signature appears randomly in email text.

Greetings again,

I have a problem with Entourage 2004. After I've composed an email, I
select which email address I'm going to send the message from (by using
the dropdown menu). Each of my addresses has a different signature
based on the use of the address, one is for my business, one for
personal, etc.

The problem is that sometimes the signature just pops up in the middle
of the email message text, rather than at the end. Sometimes it puts it
at the end. It happens with all my addresses and I can't see any common
factors that make it react this way. It happens about 1 out of every 3
times.

Any clues?

Thanks.

What version of Entourage? This sort of problem was worse in earlier
versions of Entourage X (and 2001) than in 2004, but it can still
occasionally happen.

1) Why don't you set the account before you start writing? End of problem.

2) If you forget, then before switching accounts, put the cursor at the END
of your message, just above the signature. When you get the sig in the
middle, it will be happening where the cursor is.

3) Don't ever type hyphens followed by a space and a carriage return. That's
used as the demarcation sign for signatures. But _always_ leave that
demarcation at the top of you signatures when you make them. That's what
Entourage looks for when replacing one sig with another.

Greetings,

Thanks Paul. I appreciate the response. You must've missed my first
sentence because that's where I addressed your first question. My
problem is with Entourage 2004. Oddly, I never had the problem with any
previous version of Entourage.

1. I don't set my email "from" address before composing the email
because I use it to keep from sending emails prematurely. I set up a
dummy account as my default account that is simply called "choose
account" and has no SMTP server. Because I use quick keys to send
emails, by having this "dummy" account, it keeps me from inadvertently
sending an email before it's complete. Might sound confusing but it's
really a good system (if there were no signature bug.)
2. I do put the cursor at the end. It makes no difference.
3. I don't ever type hyphens followed by a space and a carriage return.
It may seem strange that I know that I don't ever do that. But I'm a
writer by vocation and I cannot think of an occasion where I would end
a line with a hyphen. Finally, I have left the hyphens at the beginning
of all signatures.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

John.

No, that's it for suggestions.

There was a really bad bug in Entourage 2001 and earlier versions of X which
would _delete half the text of your message_ - everything below the new
inserted signature, when changing signatures midstream. That was really bad!
Entourage 2004 never ever does that. I expect that the greater prevalence of
"signatures in the middle" may be somehow connected with the new procedures
preventing data loss. It may well be that in Entourage X you didn't get sigs
in the middle because they wiped out everything that followed.

An alternate method of ensuring you didn't send messages prematurely, and
that would still allow you to set the account before writing the message,
would be to Work Offline. You can still send messages whenever you want -
when you do you get an alert asking if you want to Connect for just that on
action or to Work Online or to Cancel. And you can still Send & Receive All
- you just get that same alert. So it would make sense to to run the Send &
Receive All schedule repeating automatically, nut only manually. That would
prevent annoyance. If that could work for you, Work Offline (Entourage menu)
and choose the correct account before writing new messages.
