From the Encarta dictionary:

"a figure of speech that draws a comparison between two different things,
especially a phrase containing the word 'like' or 'as,' for example, 'as
white as a sheet.'"

....and hey, I got that by typing the word "simile" in a Word 2003 document,
then Alt-clicking it to bring up the research pane! Is that cool or what?

The comparison of two unlike things using "like" or "as."

He eats like a pig.

She is dumb as a box of rocks.

Rather than a 'peer', would you not prefer to
be a 'primus inter pares'?
