Simple junk mail definition

Wilfred

I want to create a rule to elimate junk mail once and for all. Actually,
"create" is a loose term. I want to "copy" a rule that I use on a secondary
Hotmail account.

Hotmail has an "Exclusive" Junk E-Mail Filter that will only receive e-mail
from addresses appearing in my Contacts. It works perfectly!

I don't ever wish to see e-mail from anyone I have not added to my Outlook
Contacts. I make it a point to keep Contacts up to date. If someone in my
list gives my e-mail address to someone else - too bad. I dont wish to
receive e-mails from them. If I havent personally added the senders to my
list, they can use smoke signals to communicate with me.

Hi Wilfred,
This rule is an easy one to create. Well, I shouldn't say rule. If you go
to Actions/Junk e-mail/Junk e-mail options and check the box for safe lists
only, and then check the box below it that says permenantly delete junk
e-mail it should solve your problem. To be sure that your contact list is
set up to be the only safe senders, go to the safe senders tab, and only
check the box for use contact list as safe senders. Hope that was clear.

Thanks - Chad

My version of Outlook does not appear to have the options you suggest. When
I click on Actions/Junk E-mail, there is no Junk e-mail options menu item.

Outlook 2003 is the only version that _does_ have that menu item. What menu
items below Actions>Junk E-mail do you have?

You can also get at the same data with Tools>Options>Junk E-mail.

I am using Outlook 2002 SP3.

Under Actions>Junk E-mail I get two menu items:
1. Add to Junk Sender's list
2. Add to Adult Content Sender's list

In your earlier message, you said:
Outlook 2003 SP3.

Perhaps that confused some people, as there is no such version.

Outlook 2002's junk mail filter is very simple-minded and doesn't have a
safe list that I recall. As far as I recall, you can't have everything
automatically classed as junk except for messages from your Contacts.
You'll need an add-on for that, if one even exists.

You neglected to mention your version of Outlook.

I located the "Sender is in specified Address Book" condition in Outlook
2002 but I am not sure how I would use it. I think I need a "Sender is NOT
is specified Address Book" condition in order to do what I want, that is,
automatically delete all messages that originate from senders I have not
added to my Contacts.

See http://www.slipstick.com/rules/junkmail.htm#sue and the note for Outlook
2002 using the "sender is in address book" condition.

Exactly. Set no condition, the desired action, and then create an *exception* using "Sender is in specified address book."
