a song, perfectly timed, works perfectly on my laptop. Then we burn a CD as I
am taking it to a conference, but it doens't work on anyone else's computer;
what is missing is the 2 second slide trasition that i chose. Help, big
conference coming up that will only let me use powerpoint. Help, can you hear

Not sure about the 2-sceond slide transition specifically, but PPT and
"perfectly timed" should not be used in the same sentence together. See

Getting timings to work across machines is often difficult. Is there any
reason why you can't bring your own laptop?

Hi David, what a drag. The conference only allows power point on their
computers but you know, you're right, i will write and ask again. It seems
odd that this should be a problem, as I see poeple bringing their cd's to
conferences all the time, how do they get it to work or am i complicating
things with music etc. How's Maryland? My old alma mater.

Ha! A sense of humor. OK, i'll go look at the site. But I wonder why the
conference demands exclusive use of PP when it means I can't even get it to
work on another computer!!!! Sheesh!!!

Hi Sonia, let's see... I mean that I have a 4 minute song and 60 odd slides
of photographs. I have set 2 second slide transitions and it's timed
perfectly when I play it from my laptop and when I play the CD I made, on my
laptop. But when I take the cd to someone else's computer, (I have tried 3
now), the music is good, starts on the correct slide, but there is no
transition between slides, so one slide comes on and immediately goes to the
next one, which means the slides are completed a long time before the music
is over. There is none of the nice 2 second fading. Thanks for any help.

Maryland is hot and muggy (but I think most of the country is this way). I
think most people don't try to get exact timing of sound and slide
transitions to work. Most other features tend to transfer fairly well from
computer to computer. However, most of the conferences I attend encourage
everyone to bring their own laptop even though they provide computers with
PowerPoint.

As you'll see at the link I provided, synchronization is not something that
PowerPoint does. If you're going to present to a large group of strangers and
you want to ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible, I would ask a
few questions. How will you be connecting to the sound system in the room? If
you don't know or if there is a possibility that the room doesn't have a sound
system, I would get rid of the music in the presentation. That will
resolve/eliminate the synchronization issue.

Hi Cat,

Couple of things.

1) If you are not seeing ANY transition between the slides on someone else's
computer, you may want to check the versions. If you are using transitions
from PowerPoint 2002 (XP) or 2003, and the presentation is played back on 97
or 2000, then the animations that are not understood will simply be ignored
and the slide will advance without transition. You can try going back thru
your presentation and replacing the newer animations with ones available
from 2000 and prior.

2) I know time is short, but for sound to image synchronization without
animations, you may want to use Photo Story or Windows Movie Maker 2.
Create the movie file, then import it into the PowerPoint (I'd *strongly*
recommend running it thru PFC). Movies are made to sync, PowerPoint is just
not not.

PowerPoint, while it is being called to do much more now, was primarily
designed as a slide show replacement. It was built to accompany a live
speaker, not music. This is a weakness of the program because exact timings
are not maintained from one machine to another or even from one run to
another. The longer it takes with the transitions, the farther it falls
behind. The small timing errors are cumulative and may result in the sound
and slides ending many seconds apart. This is not bad if a person is
talking, but if you are trying to match musical beats, it can be disastrous.
