Slow address search

It takes around 10 -15 seconds to find a contact using the "name/company
contains" etc box in the Address part of Entourage. That's bad enough
but matters are made worse by not being able to do anything else while
it searches.

Is there a way speeding this up? (The database is rebuilt pretty
regularly.)

Can you clarify a bit what you mean by "the Address part of Entourage"?
Are you referring to:

1. Address Book open, using the fast filter in upper right.
2. New message draft window open, with Address Book displayed on the right.
3. Advanced Find window with Name selected.
4. Basic Find window open with Contacts selected and "Subject..." box checked.

Also, how many contacts do you have in your Address Book?

Good question. Where can I find a total? 'Help' doesn't help. If I ask
it to print my Address Book there are some 500 odd pages.. not sure that
helps really?

Switch to the address book view, and you should see the number in the
left-hand bottom corner ("xxx items displayed, xxx selected").

You're correct; it's slower than it should be. I have 2824 contact
records and it takes about 17 seconds to locate "jenna" from when I
start typing the "j". I've recently defragmented my hard drive and made
my Entourage database a contiguous file so that isn't an issue. On the
other hand, LaunchBar, which also can search Entourage contacts (as
well as file names and bookmarks at the same time) finds "jenna" in 3
to 4 seconds! So my recommendation: get LaunchBar!

MacBU: You guys really need to fix this. I consider it to be broken
because it used to be a lot faster.
