Slow Download of Links after 11.8110.8202

Working with Office 2003 EXCEL and PPT/PPS files stored on a network drive.

Can ping network server <1ms
Can Open, Save, and Close EXCEL and PPT files in approx 2 seconds

When working with PowerPoint SP2 at patch level 11.8110,9202 I can open the
links (Edit > Links) in approx 2 seconds.

When working with PowerPoint SP2 at patch level 11.8135.8202 it can take
upwards of 3 minutes to open links (Edit > Links).

Updating links is of course even worse. Both bringing the links up and then
updating manual links (individually or in mass) at patch level 11.8135.8202
appears to create massive network traffic as observed in task manager.

I am being pushed by Administrator to upgrade my patches (and soon to
upgrade to Office 2007 which actually breaks links). Is there some level of
Office 2003 and 2007 which resolves this "latency" issue?
