Slow Exchange 2003 sync

Hi all,
I got a MacBookPro with 10.5.4 and 2GB memory. Also I'm using a similar HP notbook with Outlook 2007. In our company we're running a Exchange Server 2003 with SP2. I'm connected with GB network.
After the Outlook installation on my HP, it tooks 25 min til all my mails (about 300MB) are syncronised.
After the Entourage installation on the Mac it tooks 2 days!!! Also if I'm not connected for a view days on our exchange server it's very very slow til everything is synced when I'm connect again.
I made the same experience on a differnt MacPro in our company.
Somebody got a idea why this is so slow?
Our IT guy in the company is very experienced but not with Mac :) He just told me that he saw on the proxy log that the sync is done upon the web (Outlook web access). Is this the reason? If yes, is there any chance to improve the performance?

Very informative thread. Thanks mr. jolly

Entourage connects to exchange with OWA. How f**#!ing brilliant is that?!!!
And I thought the lack of HTML support, or the ability to import PST files
was bad, but this is a really brain dead programming model.

Because Entourage uses OWA to access Exchange rather than MAPI.

A slight clarification on this:

Entourage connects to Exchange using WebDAV. OWA also connects to
Exchange Server via WebDAV. It's possible to use the OWA address in
Entourage to get to your account.

However, many folks try to use their OWA address from inside their
company network and this can cause the symptoms described. The problem
with this connection is that you're most likely passing through a proxy
server to get to the Internet and then back to the OWA server, which
then talks to your back-end Exchange server where your mail is actually
hosted. That's a lot of hops.

If on the same network as the Exchange Server then you want to use a
back-end server address, not an OWA address.

I have more information on optimizing Entourage connections with
Exchange here:
