slow sending to group

I use mac os x 10.4.6 and EntourageMac 10.1.1

Sending to a group of about 90 names takes about 10/15 minutes. This
does not appear to happen with Apple Mail ( or so my wife says!) or
when I had earlier versions of Mac os.

Anyone know why and if there is a solution?

No one got any thoughts?
My only thought is, it should not take so long. I have used Entourage to
send to several large groups, and it happens in a minute or two. It does
have to verify all the addresses, and if any of them are invalid, the entire
message gets rejected. But the problem isn't likely with Entourage per se.

One thing to try; split the group into two groups of 45. Your ISP may have
some kind of limit on the number of recipients for a single message...

Thanks but the size of the grouyp is not the problem. My ISP appears
to allow up to one hundred. I actually send to several groups and I
keep the largest to under a hundred. As you say it is probably not
Entourage per se but it is something to do with it. Until I had newer
MacOS a group of this size went off in seconds never mind a minute or
two. Each group now takes 10/15 minutes. As I said Apple mail does not
seem to be slow for a group although I have not checked it myself.
Although I use Apple mail all the time I use Entourage for some group
mailings for other resons.

I bet Entourage is doing DNS lookups for all the addresses. Slow DNS
responses could cause these sorts of delays. The only way you can try
to stop this is:

Entourage > Preferences > Compose

Uncheck "Automatically check names when sending messages"

For good measure (i.e. I don't think this is your problem) also:

Uncheck "Search directory services when addressing messages"

You could be on to it because I did play about with DNS addresses in
network settings following some upgrade a while back - the upgrade
seemed to have slowed the net up something awful until I put in DNS
settings. However I do not realy understand the subject - out of my
depth. Can't remember when all that happened - could have been a Mac
OS upgrade or when we put in wireless. Could it be anything to do with
wireless - if all else fails I shall try wire again!

The "automatically check names" box IS unchecked. I'm afraid I cant
find the "search directory services ......" box. Can you tell me
where it is?

I shall experiment with removing the DNS address and see if that
affects it. Probably no news for a few days as I do not send the
group messages very frequently

Thanks again

David

It is right underneath the "automatically check names" box in Entourage
2004. I can't remember if (or where) it existed in previous versions of
Entourage.

I am on Entourage Mac 10.1.1 - probably quite old now. Anyway the box
is just not there!!!

As I said I shall try a few things when I next have a group message to
go.

Thanks again

Wow, pretty prehistoric :)

It might be worth updating your Office to 10.1.7 from
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/>. The 10.1.2 update improved the
database limits; I can't recall what else got improved...

Cheers,

Chris
