Slow Startup Time When Opening Documents From GUI

We're running Office 2000 on a bunch of brand-new computers and have
an interesting problem. If we open one of our Word or Excel documents
by double-clicking on the icon (or right-clicking and selecting "Open
With > Microsoft Word/Excel") it takes a solid 20 seconds for the
program and document to open. This is compared to a near
instantaneous launching of the program from the start menu, or of the
program and document from the command line. This doesn't occur with
OpenOffice, which is why I think this is an Office, not Windows
problem.

Any ideas?

I had a similar problem, and found that the HP digital imaging monitor in the
system tray was to blame. Once I killed that (and removed it from my startup
menu) the problem went away.

I'll check that, but these are all new computers, none of which have
any HP devices directly installed. (There are two HP printers that
are shared by the server that are installed.)
