Slow to browse when opening & saving files

We have Office 2003 runnning on a laptop with Norton Internet Security
2003/4, 1.6GHz-1.8Ghz Pentium mobile processor 512MB RAM. Gets DHCP from the
local server (2000 server) and uses that server as it's DNS & WINS server.

Basically when you go to open or save a file from within an Office
application, once you click on the drop down list to change where you want to
save it to, the application doesn't respond for anywhere from 15 seconds to a
minute, then allows you to browse. The same thing also happens when trying to
add attachments to an e-mail in Outlook. I have scoured Google groups and the
like trying to find answers but have yet to find anything to help. I have
tried disabling Norton's completely, unregistering Office's virus service,
repairing Office and installing all Service Packs/Updates without any luck.

The laptop has an i-Mate attached and also an HP 2710 MFC.

Any further ideas appreciated.

Thanks,

Leigh

All mapped network drives are accessible via My Computer and can be browsed
without any delay.

It's not opening the files that is the slowness, it is browsing to the files
to open them or save them that causes the programs to freeze for a while.
Once found, the files open at normal speed.
