Slow to switch

J

Jesse Selengut

Hello -

Does anyone have this problem or a possible fix?

Entourage seems really darn slow at first. The first time I go to switch
views (from Mail to Address Book for example) it takes almost 30 seconds.
After I've switched a few times it runs as quickly as I'd come to expect
form Entourage X.

What's up with that?!? I am running OX 10.3.4 with 512 RAM - This problem
happens even when no other programs are running.

Any help is appreciated. THANKS

It sounds like you have something seriously wrong with your system. That or
you are using an extremely old machine, which still shouldn't take that
long. It took only a second on a 333 MHz iMac I used to own.

Maybe your disk is seriously fragmented? Do you hear a lot of disk activity
when you do this? How much free space is left on your HD?

I'd do the basics: run disk doctor, verify and repair; repair permissions;
run a defrag utility if you have one.

Before you do all that, try one other thing:

Click on the Name column header in Address Book. Does that help? Did you
perhaps have no column selected?

Thanks Paul -

I had the Home Address Column selected in the address book. Maybe Entourage
was choking on the fact over 300 of my contacts do not have any home address
listed and was trying to "order" them.

I switched back to Name and now it is smooth as it should be. Thanks.

Thanks also to Walt for his suggestion although I am happy the simple
solution worked.

Best,
Jesse

My guess is you have the Address Book sorted by a column that is not indexed
in the database, and you have many hundreds (if not thousands) of contacts.

To speed up the switch, sort by name, company, or category. That should fix
it.
