SMTP Authentication Failed...

Felipe Ramirez

Setup:
- Mac OS X 10.3.4
- Entourage 2004
- BellSouth SMTP (part ADSL service)

Hello, recently my ISP just set up SMTP authentication on their
outgoing mail servers. I followed the instructions outlined in:

http://help.bellsouth.net/blscontent/commoncontent/faq/smtp_desc.asp

These instructions are for Outlook & Outlook Express on Windows but
made the exact changes in Entourage. When trying to send mail using
the new setup I get the message:

"Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't support any of the
available authentication methods."

Here's what I changed in Entourage:

1. Entourage -> Account Settings...
2. Edit my email acount (POP) settings
3. Under "Sending Mail" clicked on "Click here for advanced sending
options"
4. In the new window checked the following:
- "SMTP server requires authentiaction"
- "Use same settings as recieving mail server (radio button)"

After doing that and trying to send the message, I get the error
stated above. Did I miss something?

Another interesting tidbit of info is that I am currently watching my
network port connections and when I click "Send All" in Entourage
after making these changes I don't see my machine even attempting to
connect to any server on port 25, I just get the error message. So I
guess Entourage isn't lying when it says it "doesn't support any of
the available authentication methods" because it doesn't even attempt
to make a connection. If this is the case then why the heck would MS
put the option in Entourage? And how freaking hard is it to put SMTP
authentication functionality in your product anyway? Gees!

Any help woudl be greatly appreciated.

Felipe

P.S. I have set this up on the Win XP/Outlook 2004 machine on my
network and it works fine, so it doesn't appear to be an ISP issue.

I just talked to Bell South.
I have the same problem. There answer was to switch to Mail.
I use mail and made the SMPT change with no problems.
My wife uses Entourage.

Hmmm. Ok, maybe I'm missing something here but what if I use
Entourage (many reasons for this, one is I spent $400 on Office and
I'd like to get my money's worth)? I hardly call "switching to Mail"
a solution.
