SMTP authentication failure

I posted this before, but thought I'd give it one more try with a
different subject line...

I changed hosting providers a while ago for one of my domains and I
haven't been able to send messages with the new mail server.

It's Entourage-specific. I can send fine using Outlook Express or on my
PC using Outlook. However, I get the following error with Entourage:

"Mail could not be sent using the account "abc."SMTP authentication
failed. Your account ID or security settings may be incorrect. Would
you like to try re-entering your account ID/password?"

This happens with every e-mail account on that domain.

I did find a support note on the MS site saying that Entourage 2003
dropped support for an older authentication scheme, but it implied it
was a change in that version and I'm running an older one.

- Mac OS 9.2.2
- Entourage 2001 v9.0.1
- POP and SMTP servers are the same
- Does require "SMTP server requires authentication" to be on and set
to the same as incoming server (other e-mail accounts also do this and
work fine).
- Again, works fine from other e-mail clients on same system, so
wouldn't seem to be a server, ISP, or system problem. It's specific to
Entourage.

I'm out of ideas. Thanks.

You probably don't want to hear this, but I'd recommend upgrading to OS X
and Entourage 2004.

I assume that you've double-checked your account ID and password. After
Entourage asks you to re-enter them, does it send the message when you do
so?

You also said that your POP and SMTP servers are the same. That's unusual;
I have three POP accounts on different ISPs, and none of them have the same
POP and SMTP servers.

The OS X upgrade will happen when I can afford to upgrade the CPU, but
unfortunately, not until then.

Yes, the account ID info is good. No, it does not send the message
after I reenter them -- just gives the same error again. I know the
account ID info is fine because I can send from Outlook Express using
the same ID info with no problem (or using Outlook on my PC).

I have about 10 accounts on 5 different ISPs/host providers. 3 of them
use different POP/SMTP servers and 2 use the same (in both cases it's
mail.domain-name.com).

Plus pay for new versions of most of your software.
Grasping at straws--it may be worth testing whether re-entering the
information instead of setting it to "same as incoming" does anything.

Tried that too. No go. It's interesting that the account setup UI is
exactly the same between Entourage and Outlook Express and all works
fine in OE. Well, maybe it's not that interesting.
