sort msgs by 'conversation'?

I'm coming over from Apple Mail to take advantage of the Project Center and
the integrated Calendar/Task/Contact functions. Aside from a generally
"clunkier" interface than Mail which is par for MS apps, it appears there is
no facility for viewing email (and Usenet message groups!) by threaded
conversation. Is this true? If so, it would practically be a showstopper for
me. Grouping by message subject only gets me halfway there.

Please advise,

Unfortunately threading by reference and threading by conversation is not
available in Entourage. It's an often requested feature.

In the meantime, I use a custom arrangement to group threads for mailing
lists and newsgroups. It's not ideal because messages with subject changes
aren't grouped and threading does not indent to show which messages are
replies to which. Here's the custom arrangement I use:

I've set up a custom arrangement (View > Arrange By > Edit Custom
Arrangements). It looks like this:

Group items by: Subject
Sort groups by: Sent Newest on Top
Sort items within groups by: Sent Oldest on Top
Default display for groups: Expanded

I can then order any folder or newsgroup that way by opening it and then
going to View > Arrange By > My Custom Arrangement (right below the Edit
Custom Arrangements item). It sounds like you definitely want items grouped
by subject. You then have flexibility as to how you want to subject groups
ordered (the second option), and how you want the items within each group
sorted (the third option). Explore the options to see what works best for
you, save it, and then apply it to a folder.

Thanks for the thorough response. Looks like this will have to do until
threading by conversation is a built-in. Hopefully it's high on the list
given Outlook Express has had this for quite some time.

thanks,

Outlook Express Mac never had it. OE Windows is not related to the Mac
products like Entourage. But maybe the MacBU will someday get so fed up
hearing about this that they'll introduce it for Entourage too.

Please "Reply To Newsgroup" to reply to this message. Emails will be
ignored.

PLEASE always state which version of Microsoft Office you are using -
**2004**, X or 2001. It's often impossible to answer your questions
otherwise.

I recently bought and installed Office 2004, and was looking for the
indent feature too, as I used this in Outlook Express extensively. The
"new features for 2004" claims that Entourage has the following:

Group all messages about the same topic, indenting replies and
producing a cascading "waterfall" effect that makes it easier to
follow the flow of discussion.

However, I do not find a way to do this "cascading" effect that is
mentioned by Microsoft above.
Can anyone shed some light on whether this feature is truly there in
the 2004 edition, and if so, how to turn it on?

View menu, 'arrange by', 'show in groups'

Note that this is not full 'thread by reference' as you can get in some
dedicated newsreaders.

I tried this, and it does not meet the requirements - i.e. what I have
used with OE on Windows for years.
I am also running into problems wth Entourage 2004 - it does not show
all the postings that I make. However, when I check with OE using a PC,
these postings are in fact there.

I am a little disappointed to state the least, with Entourage 2004 - OE
on Windows has more capabilities, although there seem to be more bells
and whistles in Ent. 2004, but basic functionaliity is not present or
functioning correctly.

Any help wiill be appreciated - also where can I get a full manual on
Entourage 2004?

Are you connecting to an exchange server? There have been a few posts about
missing messages with exchange clients, but I have not seen any reports of
this happening with other types of accounts.

In the Mailing List Manager there is a setting to suppress your own messages
returning from a mailing list - is this setting causing your problem?

As for manuals, the best place to start is probably the Entourage Help Pages
- see my sig for the URL
