Sorting Memo Field by Converting to Text

I have a continuous form set up that presents a snapshot of data. One field
is a memo field and users would like to be able to sort by this field.

By using Left(fld, x) or format(fld,"") in the record source I can convert
the field to text which allows the user to Sort by that field (biggest memo
so far is 1200 characters).

My form also allows users to enter search criteria for the memo field.

Does anyone have any information on how much of a performance hit I can
expect from converting to text this way (particularly when searching on the
memo field)?
