When I am looking at messages in the inbox and choose to delete one it then
highlights the prvious message. I want it to highlight the next message and
cannot figure out how to do this through the menu or preferences. Help!

Try these keyboard shortcuts:

Option + Command (Apple) + [ Delete the current message and display the
previous message.

Option + Command (Apple) + ] Delete the current message and display the
next message.

Yes, But I don't think that's what the user - or I for that matter
want to do - can we not change something (even in the coding through
terminal) that changes the default, next selected item. This has
annoyed me for almost 4 years - it's kind of "illogical" as you would
expect it to "delete down" no? (or maybe there is an interface
convention I don't know about???)

Thank

Unfortunately, Mickey's suggestion is the only viable alternative. The
default and only behavior of the Delete button is to behave the way it
does. The keyboard command to delete and display the next read is the
only way of doing what you're asking.

What sort order do you have for your inbox? I have mine sorted with the most
recent messages at the top, and when I delete a message Entourage moves up
to the next message.
