sound notification

I have sound options selected for new mail notification,
but when I open the program, and new mails filter in, I
get no sound or notice.

If I then reset the sound options again in the
Tools/Options/e-mail options/advanced e-mail options
section, the sound notification will then work for
messages, but once I leave the program, and then re-open
it, I've got the same problem of no sound notification.

I would appreciate any guidance.
