Sounds

I don't receive any sound notifications for new emails. Either exchange emails pop emails. For exchange emails I get small window notification but not for the pop messages. I checked preferacnes and all the right boxes are checked and I ran the disk permissions utilities to seeif anything needed repair and that cam back with no repairs necessary.
Suggestions?

Yes. Search this newsgroup; you'll find this topic has been discussed at
great lengths and that it is a known issue. As for the notification window:
this window will only show up if Entourage is not active, i.e. it is not the
foremost window. Can you verify if this is the case for you?

Thanks Mike

First I did search using the word "sound" and "sounds" and nothing came up. Can you tell me what I should use to find the link.

I haven't really paid attention to whether Entourage if the frontmost, active, window I receive a "window notice" but I will try it...I assume you are saying this is a bug and that they only show up when it is the foremost window, active window.

I just tried a test sending email from on online account to Entoruage and made sure it was the "foremost, active window" and this time no windwo notice or sound for either the Exchange account or the pop account

It depends on how you are accessing these newsgroups: the Office for Mac
forum's search function is currently broken, so you may not find anything.
However, if you go to the Entourage section, you will only need to go back a
page or two to find a number of related topics. The sounds do not work
because of a bug that was introduced with Leopard; since so many people have
complained about it, I would expect to see a fix shortly.

No, I'm not talking about a bug; this is the expected behaviour, actually.
If Entourage is active, i.e. the application whose menu bar is active, you
will not see the notification alert. Note that Entourage, or any other Mac
OS X application, can remain active even if you minimise it; you will need
to switch to another application, such as the Finder, to make it run in the
background and to see the notification alerts.

Okay so when it is the active window there is no window notice. What about sound notice?

When Entourage is not the active window and/or in the tray then I get Window Notices.

Can you send me the link for the sound notification problem or direct me a little on the proper search word?

I tested the Window notification having Entourage in the background and it does give me window alerts for both exchange and the pop accounts but no sounds......

Do sounds work the same way? Only when Entourage is not the foremost window?

Hi Kevin,

no, you should normally get sounds with the notification window; however, as
I wrote in my last post, sounds are broken in Entourage 2008 under Leopard,
but I would expect it to get fixed soon. See here for more details:

If the above link doesn't work, try this one:

Thanks for the information, is there a forum other then this one I can subscribe to to just get Entourage information that I write about. I don't hve time to read blogs with huge amounts of information.

Your best choice would be to stay subscribed to this group. Also, make sure
to set Microsoft AutoUpdate to look for updates automatically; that way, you
can be sure to have the latest version of Office, including all the bug
fixes that the update includes.

If you use your Entourage newsreader to subscribe to this list, you can
search the messages using Entourage and not have to rely on web searches.
The newsreader can download past messages....just click on "more". However,
reading the Entourage Help Blog is a quick way to get info. You get alerts
in a timely manner and in-depth info on a topic like broken sounds. It's not
meant that you go back and read all previous posts. Just click on the RSS
button to subscribe to the blog. Safari includes RSS. There are good free
newsreaders like NetNewsWire that are easy to use. Once you find how easy it
is to get your news through a newsreader, you'll be happy you added it to
your computer habits.

thanks for the info. I would subscribe but it appears that I am missing "The Entourage Newsreader" folder and the Microsoft components within. How can I reinstall them? Entourage wants server name etc.

Entourage Newsreader" folder and the Microsoft components within. How can I
reinstall them? Entourage wants server name etc.

Are you saying that when you click on the Microsoft News Server in the
folder window of Entourage that there are no servers? Did you click on
Refresh at the top? I've never heard of the Microsoft News Server missing.
If it's truly missing, please give as much details as possible. You can send
me screenshots off list if you like.

Fix this address --> diane AT entourage dot mvps dot org

One of the nice things about using the Entourage newsreader for the Office
newsgroups, is that Microsoft has made it's servers available without having
to enter server names etc.
