Space after a Period

I just noticed the text editor win MS Entourage 11.2.3 does not add
extra space after a period at the end of a sentence. I have to remember
the old High School typing class rule to manually enter two spaces after
a period.

I wonder what happened to the old typing rule? I was under the
impression that modern word processors and text editors all added some
extra space after a period.

Old rule. Now the rule is one space after a period. As you can tell from
this post, I am from the old school! Once space after a period is also
"forced" on you if you create web pages by such products as Dreamweaver.
Guess I'll have to get used to it.

Who makes these rules? I find text with two spaces between sentences
are more readable than those with one.

If you post in the Word n.g. they probably have a lot more to say about it.
In the old days, all fonts were monospace (like a typewriter). With
variable spacing, two spaces is almost overkill. Nevertheless, since I grew
up learning to type a couple of years before computers invaded my life, I
still subscribe to the old school conventions. YMMV.

The publishers do. Modern printing techniques call for one space after a
period. Double spaces will be edited to one by a junior editor/proofreader.

Those writing for personal pleasure may prefer the look of two, but that is
their personal preference.
