Spacebar in reading pane randomly skips to next unread message

IN outlook 2003 SP1, under Windows XP SP2, I use the reading pane to go
though messages. I use the space bar to advance to the next unread
portion of the message.

Every so often, Outlook apparently decides I have read enough, and it
skips to the next message, rather than scrolling to the next page.

Is there a way to fix this?

Thank you.

If it is random and you have no idea what may be the root cause, then it
will make it very hard to diagnose and fix. What commonalities do you see
when it does happen?

Try a different keyboard.

The first -and easiest- thing is to check the hardware, and it's easy too-
plug a different keyboard in.

It is always four or five screens into the message. Most times, it is
after several seconds of inactivity, but not always. I hit the
spacebar, and outlook displays the first screen of the next message,
even though there is more of the first message to display.

This is a little more difficult to do on my laptop. I don't have a
problem with any other application.

You didn't say it was a laptop, but if it has the option of an external
keyboard the internal one may be disabled
